RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AUGUST 9TH AS INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY IN THE CITY OF YONKERS.

WHEREAS, Indigenous peoples are the original inhabitants of this land and have preserved their cultural heritage, traditions, and knowledge across generations; and
WHEREAS, August 9 is recognized internationally as the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, as established by the United Nations General Assembly, to raise awareness of the rights, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities worldwide; and
WHEREAS, Indigenous peoples live in all regions of the world, numbering between 370 and 500 million, representing a significant portion of the world’s cultural diversity, speaking the majority of its nearly 7,000 languages, and sustaining approximately 5,000 distinct cultures; and
WHEREAS, We honor the strength, experiences, and lifeways of Indigenous peoples worldwide, who have maintained social, cultural, economic, and political characteristics distinct from dominant societies; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing this day provides an opportunity to celebrate and reinforce the achievements and contributions of Indigenous peoples to humanity; and
WHEREAS, Indigenous peoples continue to contribute to the cultural, social, environmental, and economic fabric of our community; and
WHEREAS, It is important to acknowledge the historical injustices and ongoing challenges faced by Indigenous peoples while promoting respect, education, and reconciliation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Yonkers hereby proclaims August 9th as Indigenous Peoples Day in the City of Yonkers; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that all residents are encouraged to
Celebrate the City’s diverse cultures; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this shall take effect immediately.
