RESOLUTION

BY COUNCIL PRESIDENT COLLINS-BELLAMY, MAJORITY LEADER RUBBO, MINORITY LEADER BREEN, MAJORITY WHIP NORMAN, COUNCILMEMBERS DIAZ, PINEDA-ISAAC AND HODGES.

RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS DECLARING THE MONTH OF MARCH 2026 "WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH." AND DECLARING MARCH 8, 2026 AS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY"

WHEREAS, Women's History Month is traditionally observed in March of each year. International Women's Day is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8th; and

WHEREAS, the month of March observes the vital role women have played in our great City and Nation; and

WHEREAS, a public law was passed by Congress in 1981 authorizing the President to designate the week starting on March 7, 1982, as the first ever Women's History Week, "to commemorate and encourage the study, observance, and celebration" of the role women have played in American history; and

WHEREAS, in 1987, Congress passed a law extending the week-long observance to the entire month of March in order to have enough time to hold celebratory programs and activities; and

WHEREAS, Women's History Month is designed to recognize and pay tribute to the many contributions made by women to our society, which at times are overlooked and not acknowledged as they should; and

WHEREAS, Women's History Month seeks to emphasize that Women's History makes up American History; and

WHEREAS, Women's History Month acknowledges the achievements of women in the Military, the Arts, Civil Rights, Education, Entertainment, History, Law, Literature, Medicine, Music, Politics, Science, Sports, and other fields; and

WHEREAS, International Women's Day is a focal point in the women's history rights movement. It brings attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women: and
