RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS RECOGNIZING TURQUOISE TAKEOVER AND DECLARING THE WEEK OF MAY 4-10, 2026, AS LUNG CANCER ACTION WEEK IN THE CITY OF YONKERS

Whereas, Lung Cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among individuals in the United States, accounting for more deaths than colon cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer combines; and
Whereas, about every two and a quarter minutes, a person in the U.S. is diagnosed with lung cancer. In 2025, The American Cancer Society’s estimates about 226,650 new cases of lung cancer and about 124,730 deaths from lung cancer; and
Whereas, Turquoise Takeover and Lung Cancer Action Week raises awareness for lung cancer and inspire action to defeat the disease; and
Whereas, Lung Cancer screening saves lives, and advocacy and increased awareness will result in more high-risk individuals getting screened; and
Whereas, LUNG FORCE is a national initiative led by the American Lung Association that unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung cancer; and
Whereas, Through education, advocacy and research, they work to ensure fewer people are diagnosed and those living with lung cancer live longer; and
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of Yonkers recognizing Turquoise Takeover and declaring the week of May 4-10, 2026 as Lung Cancer Action Week in the City of Yonkers.
