RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS DECLARING OCTOBER 6, 2026, AS “WORLD CEREBRAL PALSY DAY” IN THE CITY OF YONKERS.

WHEREAS, World Cerebral Palsy Day is a global movement that started in 2012 recognized every year on October 6th; and
WHEREAS, Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of disorders that affect a person’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture according to the CDC; and
WHEREAS, CP is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain, affecting person’s ability to control their muscles. It is the most common motor disability in childhood; and
WHEREAS, Around 1 million people of all ages have cerebral palsy in the U.S. according to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance Research Foundation (CPARF). According to CPARF, approximately 18 million people of all ages have the condition globally; and
WHEREAS, According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), males are more likely to have cerebral palsy than females; and
WHEREAS, There are four types of cerebral palsy: spastic, athetoid (dyskinetic), ataxic, and mixed. 1 in 4 children with cerebral palsy cannot talk, 1 in 4 cannot walk, 1 in 2 have an intellectual disability and 1 in 4 have epilepsy; and
WHEREAS, Healthcare professionals and educators throughout the Nation make bold strides in helping those affected to deal with disorder. Through physical therapy and occupational therapy, many cerebral palsy patients are learning to lead happy, productive lives in the mainstream of society; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Yonkers City Council recognize October 6, 2026, as "World Cerebral Palsy Day" in the City of Yonkers.
