RESOLUTION HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF MARY TEAGUE AND AUTHORIZING THE HONORARY STREET RENAMING OF HAWTHORNE AVENUE FROM HUDSON STREET TO MAIN STREET AS “MARY TEAGUE WAY”
WHEREAS, Mary Teague was born in County Kerry, Ireland, and made her home in the City of Yonkers, where she became a beloved and enduring figure in the downtown community; and

WHEREAS, for fifty-eight years, Mary Teague owned and operated The Tyrone House, a pub at 72 Main Street, Yonkers, which she built into a true neighborhood gathering place welcoming residents from every walk of life; and

WHEREAS, Mary Teague was known throughout the community for her warmth and hospitality, for filling The Tyrone House with traditional Irish song, and for serving home-cooked Irish fare - from hearty stew to freshly baked soda bread - to generations of patrons; and

WHEREAS, Mary Teague, alongside her husband, Jimmy Penney, made The Tyrone House a place where strangers became friends and friends became lifelong companions, helping to sustain and celebrate Yonkers’ Irish-American heritage for nearly six decades; and

WHEREAS, Mary Teague passed away February 11, 2024, at the age of 95, survived by her husband, Jimmy Penney; her children, Dennis, Maureen, and Brian; twelve grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, the City of Yonkers wishes to permanently recognize Mary Teague’s decades of contribution to the civic and cultural life of downtown Yonkers;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Yonkers hereby honors the life, legacy, and community contributions of Mary Teague; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the Council authorizes the honorary street renaming of Hawthorne Avenue from Hudson Street to Main Street as “Mary Teague Way,” to stand alongside the official street name, and be it...
