A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING LUPUS AWARENESS MONTH AND ALL EFFORTS TO EDUCATE AND BRING GREATER AWARENESS OF LUPUS
body
WHEREAS, this past May, Westchester County celebrated Lupus Awareness Month, including holding a well-attended “Health & Wellness Fair,” to educate and bring greater awareness to the community about this serious disease; and
WHEREAS, lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and immense physical pain, most commonly in the skin, the joints and internal organs; and
WHEREAS, lupus causes an individual’s immune system to attack healthy tissue, causing both acute and chronic symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, fever, headaches, hair loss, joint pain, anemia, ulcers in facial areas, among other symptoms; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that approximately 1.5 million Americans suffer from lupus, although it remains a difficult disease to diagnose and is not required to be reported to public health officials, making it difficult to track for epidemiological purposes; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Yonkers City Council hereby expresses its deep gratitude to all those who supported Lupus Awareness Month 2025 and shall endeavor to continue to encourage advances in our understanding of lupus, and support efforts to educate and bring greater awareness about this difficult chronic disease.
This resolution shall take effect immediately.
