BY COUNCIL PRESIDENT COLLINS-BELLAMY, MAJORITY LEADER RUBBO, MINORITY LEADER BREEN, MAJORITY WHIP NORMAN, COUNCILMEMBERS PINEDA-ISAAC, DIAZ, AND HODGES:
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS RECOGNIZING ITALIAN HERITAGE AND DECLARING OCTOBER 12, 2026, AS COLUMBUS DAY IN THE CITY OF YONKERS

WHEREAS, Columbus Day has long served as an opportunity for Italian Americans across the United States to celebrate their heritage, culture, traditions, and the generations of immigrants who helped build communities throughout our nation; and
WHEREAS, generations of Italian immigrants came to the United States in search of opportunity and a better life for their families, bringing with them a strong work ethic, devotion to family, entrepreneurial spirit, and rich cultural traditions; and
WHEREAS, Italian Americans have made lasting contributions to the economic, civic, cultural, and social fabric of the United States and have distinguished themselves in business, government, education, public service, the arts, the trades, and countless other fields; and
WHEREAS, the City of Yonkers has been shaped by generations of Italian-American families who have established businesses, built neighborhoods, served their community, raised families, and contributed greatly to the growth and character of our city; and
WHEREAS, for many Italian Americans, Columbus Day represents more than the recognition of one historical figure, serving as a day to honor their immigrant ancestors, celebrate Italian-American heritage, and recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of generations who pursued the American Dream; and
WHEREAS, Yonkers proudly celebrates the many cultures and immigrant communities that have contributed to its history and continue to make our city a diverse and vibrant place to live;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Yonkers hereby recognizes and declares October 12, 2026 as Columbus Day in the City of Yonkers, and honor...
