RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2026 “ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH”

WHEREAS, Italian Americans compose a significant portion of the population of the United States of America and especially the City of Yonkers; and
WHEREAS, the legacy of the courageous explorer Christopher Columbus has been passed down over generations to these intrepid immigrants and is found today in the millions of American men, women, and children of Italian descent who continue to strengthen and enrich our country and City; and
WHEREAS, in spite of, historically, facing social and religious discrimination, Italian Americans have persevered with faith and hard work to achieve the American dream and helped build our great country; and
WHEREAS, for hundreds of years generations of Italian Americans have made their homes, started businesses and raised their families in the City of Yonkers; and
WHEREAS, as a result, Italian Americans have become a vital part of the diverse fabric of the City of Yonkers while steering the course of our nation and our City’s history; and
WHEREAS, bound by enduring values of faith and family, Italian Americans have flourished in all areas of our public and economic life while preserving their proud Italian culture and traditions; and
WHEREAS, Italian Americans both in Yonkers and nationwide are engaged in every profession and industry, teach our children, serve at all levels of government, and succeed in a myriad of businesses; and
WHEREAS, drawing on the courage and principles of their forebears, Italian Americans lead in every facet of American life, dedicating their knowledge and skills to the growth of our great City and Country; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the City Council of Yonkers recognizes the rich heritage of Italian Americans and celebrates their immeasurable contributions to our Nation and our City by declaring the month of October 2026 to be Italian American Heritage Month in the City of Yonkers.
