A RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS COMMEMORATING SEPTEMBER 2026 AS NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF YONKERS

WHEREAS, National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month is observed every September to spread the word about risk and prevention, assemble more scientific research, and make progress toward a cure; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Association, Ovarian Cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths for women in the United States and accounts for more deaths than any other cancer of the reproductive system; and
WHEREAS, Ovarian Cancer is rare. A women’s risk of getting ovarian cancer during her lifetime is 1 in 78. In 2023, it was estimated that nearly 19,710 women in the U.S. will receive a new diagnosis with ovarian cancer and nearly 13,270 women will die from ovarian cancer; and
WHEREAS, There are no reliable asymptomatic screening and early detection test for ovarian cancer. Research studies have shown that the survival rate is low, with a five year relative survival rate of 50.8% because it often goes untreated until the disease has advanced; and
WHEREAS, Researchers are constantly looking for clues such as lifestyle, diet, medicines that may alter the risk of ovarian cancer. Researchers are testing new ways to screen women for ovarian cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, one method researchers are testing is looking at the pattern of proteins in the blood called proteomics to find ovarian cancer early; and
WHEREAS, The ongoing investments in ovarian cancer research, education, and awareness efforts are critical to ensure that Yonkers residents are aware of the benefits of regular testing and early detection of ovarian cancer.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Yonkers City Council hereby commemorates and declares September 2026 to be National Ovarian Awareness Month in the City of Yonkers.
