BY COUNCIL PRESIDENT COLLINS-BELLAMY, MAJORITY LEADER RUBBO, MAJORITY WHIP NORMAN, MINORITY LEADER BREEN, COUNCILMEMBERS, PINEDA-ISAAC, DIAZ AND HODGES:

Resolution of the City Council of Yonkers observing National Public Works Week and declaring the week of May 17 through May 23, 2026, as “Yonkers Public Works Week''

WHEREAS: The Yonkers Department of Public Works was established in 1893 and over the course of the past 129 years has been an integral part of the everyday lives of our residents, protecting the public health, safety and welfare of our residents as well as providing the highest levels of critical services to the residents of our City; and

 

Whereas public works infrastructure, facilities, and services are of vital

 importance to the health, safety, and well-being of the people of the City of Yonkers which is the third largest City in the State of New York, and is known to be one of the hilliest Cities in the Country making snow removal and maintenance a particularly difficult challenge; and

 

Whereas In the face of many challenges, the public works infrastructure, facilities, and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of public works professionals of this Great City including engineers and administrators; and

 

Whereas Public works professionals design, build, operate, and maintain the transportation systems, water infrastructure, sewage and refuse disposal  systems, public buildings, sanitation and waste management systems, and other structures and facilities that are vital to the people and communities of the City of Yonkers; and

 

Whereas public works professionals have played, and will continue to play, a key role in helping the United States recover from the COVID-19 pandemic; and

 

Whereas understanding the role that public infrastructure plays in protecting the environment, improving public health and safety, contributing to economic vitality, and enhancing the quality of life of every community of the City of Yonkers, also enhances the interest of the people of the State of New York; and

 

Now it be Resolved, that the Yonkers City Council observes National Public Works Week and declares the week of May 17 through May 23, 2026, as “Yonkers Public Works Week'' in the City of Yonkers.  We urge individuals and communities throughout the City to join with the Members of the Yonkers City Council, as well as representatives of American Public Works Association, with activities and ceremonies designed to pay tribute to the public works professionals of the City of Yonkers; and to recognize the substantial contributions that public works professionals make to the City of Yonkers, State of New York and the United States.
