RESOLUTION BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS PROCLAIMING AND RECOGNIZING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2026 AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" THROUGHOUT THE CITY OF YONKERS.

WHEREAS, October is currently recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer is a disease of abnormally rapid cell growth in the breast, which can affect both women and men, and can spread to other parts of the body; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer can become fatal and can spread to other body parts, including, but not limited to, the lymph nodes, lungs, liver, brain, bones, skin, and other vital organs; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, with the rate of 1 in 8 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, there are generally four stages of breast cancer from Stage I to Stage IV, which increasingly become more dangerous, as the cancer spreads, a tumor forms and grows, and other organs are affected; and
WHEREAS the five-year survival rate estimates for breast cancer vary depending on the respective stages: Stage I is 97.9%, Stage II is 89.6%, Stage III is 72% and Stage IV is 26.2%; and
WHEREAS, currently, there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection remains paramount for breast cancer control; and
WHEREAS, when breast cancer is detected early, via regular mammograms and other means, and adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance of curing the person of breast cancer, while for late-detected breast cancer, curative treatment often ceases to be an option; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer awareness helps to increase attention and reduce stigma surrounding breast cancer, in an effort to increase support for early detection and treatment, as well as the palliative care of this disease.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Yonkers City Council hereby proclaims the month of October 2026 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" throughout the City of Yonkers.
