title
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF YONKERS CALLING FOR THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO STUDY, DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT APPROPRIATE SAFETY MEASURES ON THE NORTHBOUND CENTRAL PARK AVENUE (ROUTE 100) ACCESS RAMP TO THE NORTHBOUND SPRAIN BROOK PARKWAY NEAR THE INTERSECTION WITH PALMER ROAD.
body
WHEREAS, Central Park Avenue (Route 100) is a vital thoroughfare in the City of Yonkers, and
WHEREAS, Northbound motorists on Central Park Avenue (Route 100) in the vicinity of Palmer Road regularly access the northbound Sprain Brook Parkway at that location, and
WHEREAS, As a result cars queue up on Central Park Avenue (Route 100) such that the line of cars backs up to South of Palmer Road and beyond, and
WHEREAS, the designated deceleration and queuing lane on Central Park Avenue (Route 100) becomes over loaded with cars which then end up in the travel lane(s) of Central Park Avenue (Route 100) creating a very dangerous condition, and
WHEREAS, the Yonkers residents in the surrounding neighborhood and anyone who wants to access the businesses and offices in that area of Central Park Avenue (Route 100) are confronted with cars speeding, suddenly changing lanes, stopping short and other forms of aggressive driving that make it dangerous, scary and generally unsafe to do so, and
WHEREAS, the result of all of these circumstances is an increase in accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians with serious and costly consequences including the potential for the tragic loss of life, and
WHEREAS, it is also well known that motorists in the immediate vicinity regularly exit the northbound New York State Thruway at Central Park Avenue (Route 100) to avoid the Yonkers Toll and instead access the northbound Sprain Brook Parkway as an alternate route which creates an extraordinary amount of congestion, local traffic problems and accidents making this a major public safety issue, and
WHEREAS, the neighborhood has overwhelmingly reached out for changes and has submitted several written requests to their State and Local elected representatives supporting the study, design and implementation of appropriate safety measures at the northbound Central Park Avenue (Route 100) access ramp to the northbound Sprain Brook Parkway, and
WHEREAS, the study design and installation of appropriate safety measures that would reduce speed and congestion would dramatically improve the safety of the neighborhood residents as well as all other motorists.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Members of the City Council of Yonkers call for the New York State Department of Transportation to Study, Design and Install appropriate safety measures on the northbound Central Park Avenue access ramp to the northbound Sprain Brook Parkway in order to slow down traffic, improve public safety and ultimately save lives.
FURTHERMORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this resolution will be forwarded to the New York State Department of Transportation.
