RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MARCH AS COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE CITY OF YONKERS

WHEREAS, colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States; and
WHEREAS, according to national health data, colorectal cancer affects men and women of all racial and ethnic backgrounds, with increased risk for individuals over the age of 45, those with a family history of colorectal cancer, and communities experiencing health disparities; and
WHEREAS, early detection through routine screening can prevent colorectal cancer or detect it at an early stage when treatment is most effective, significantly reducing mortality rates; and
WHEREAS, screening methods such as colonoscopy, stool-based tests, and other approved preventive measures have been proven to save lives and improve long-term health outcomes; and
WHEREAS, education, awareness, and community outreach are essential to encouraging residents to speak with healthcare providers about screening options and to adopt healthy lifestyle practices that may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer; and
WHEREAS, Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month provides an opportunity to recognize survivors, honor those who have lost their lives to the disease, and support patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and advocacy organizations dedicated to prevention and treatment efforts; and
WHEREAS, the City of Yonkers is committed to promoting public health initiatives that improve the well-being of all residents and reduce preventable illnesses through awareness, access to care, and early intervention;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Yonkers hereby proclaims the month of March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in the City of Yonkers; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council encourages all residents to learn about the risks and symptoms of colorectal cancer, consult healthcare providers regarding appropriate screening, support those impacted by the disease, and participate in local awareness and prevention efforts.
